I began my first day on the floor Tuesday morning, and 3 12-hour shifts later I can say with a fair amount of certainty that I’m going to like my floor.

My first day I was paired with a CVICU nurse who was pulled to telemetry until 3p. She was a lot of fun and almost as unfamiliar with the telemetry unit as I was, so we were both learning together. After she left I stuck with one of the telemetry regulars until I left at 7p. It was a good day. (I went to bed at 8p and didn’t get up again until 5:45a.)

My second and third day were spent with another unit regular. She was sweet, patient, and never made me feel like an idiot. Or rather, more than I was already feeling. On Thursday I charted under her name (and supervision) for one of the patients. I even got to teach her a few tricks on the computerized charting system to make some things easier and faster.

When I go back Monday morning, I will be paired with the nurse who will be my preceptor throughout my four months of orientation. I ate lunch with her Thursday, and I think we’ll get along fine. My residency program won’t be starting until later this month (February already!), but I’m looking forward to those weeks of classes geared toward telemetry nursing.

I love being a nurse!

1. Once I was walking up steps to get to a class when a guy yelled and jumped out of a nearby trash can. He looked more surprised than me, and I asked, “Wrong person?” Nodding his head, he climbed back in.
2. I hate being sick.
3. Today at work I need to go by employee health to get my second TB skin test read.
4. What’s rudeness all about?
5. If I make a mistake I ‘fess up and do what I can to correct it.
6. When I woke up this morning, I thought “One week until my first paycheck as a nurse!”.
7. As for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to watching movies, tomorrow my plans include house and apartment hunting. and Sunday I want to finish a sock.
