Lately my days are spent in either two capacities: studying or procrastinating. (Can you guess what I’m doing now?) My NCLEX is just a week away, and I’m going through the study guides I have. By the end of the week I’ll have gone through all my practice exams and be as ready as I can.

I’ve also been waiting to hear back from my first choice hospital. I got a call today reminding me to turn in a residency program application. I had thought that wouldn’t be needed until after a job offer was extended and accepted, so I hadn’t completed it yet. Does that call mean good news for me?

The residency program is “an orientation for new nursing graduates to develop a strong and well-rounded clinical foundation by rotating through multiple units.” Of the four clinical modules to select from, I’m choosing critical care. (The others are medical/surgical, women and children’s services, and perioperative services.)

The application is pretty straight forward, but the back left me pausing to think. It states “please describe your interest in the residency program and your expectations.” What do I want from this program?

I’m interested in this program because as a novice my knowledge base and clinical foundation require additional guidance in their development and application. I expect to be taught by capable and experienced nurses, and I expect to be a better nurse for having completed the program.
